The NC Pre-K Committee of Burke County will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Partnership office, 304 W. Union St., Â鶹´«Ã½. NC Pre-K meetings are open to the public and are held in handicapped accessible facilities. COVID, flu and other health restrictions will be observed. MLK Banquet
The Burke County NAACP will commemorate the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday with the 33rd annual MLK Banquet at 5 p.m. Marcus Bass of the NC Black Alliance will be the keynote speaker, and Deborah Dicks Maxwell, president of the NC NAACP State Conference will be a special guest. County-wide worship service
The Burke County NAACP will host a county-wide worship service and kickoff for its annual membership campaign at 4 p.m. at Slades Chapel AME Zion Church, 307 E. Union St., Â鶹´«Ã½. The Rev. Andrea Purcell is the host pastor, and the Rev. Wesley E. Hendrix, pastor at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, will be the guest speaker. Music will be presented by the NAACP Community Mass Choir, directed by Willette McIntosh, minister of music at Shiloh AME Church.

Pigeon Forge day trip
Unifour Christian Ministries will be taking a day trip to Pigeon Forge, making stops at the Bush’s Beans Visitor Center, flea market, Buc-ee’s and outlet stores. Lunch will be at The Old Mill Restaurant. Everyone will pay for their own meal. The cost for the trip is $40 per person, which is due by Jan. 10. A bus will pick people up at 7 a.m. at the Granite Falls Walmart, 7:15 a.m. at Big Lots in Hickory and 7:30 a.m. at Rural King in Â鶹´«Ã½. Passport Fair
The Burke County Register of Deeds Office will host a Passport Fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event offers a one-stop shop to obtain a passport for anyone who has never gotten a passport or who has received a passport but it has been more than 15 years since the issuance date of the expired passport. A cashier’s check, money order or personal check is required for fees due to the US Department of State. Appointments are recommended.
