A prisoner was caught Friday morning less than four hours after escaping from the Caldwell Correctional Center in Hudson.
Christopher Shane Greer, 44, was reported missing from the prison at 4 a.m., N.C. Department of Adult Correction Communications Director Keith Acree said.
Acree said Greer escaped by jumping a single fence at the prison.
Greer was found near the Shaire Center off Connelly Spring Road shortly before 7:30 a.m. Friday, Acree said. The Shaire Center is less than a mile from the prison.
Greer is serving time for a previous escape conviction in Guilford County that included additional charges of assault. That sentence began on July 24 following a previous sentence for possession of a firearm by a felon.
Greer’s release was scheduled for Jan. 16, 2028, according to the N.C. Department of Adult Correction website.

Greer was charged with escape jail by felon on June 28, 2023, according to the N.C. Department of Adult Correction website. He was sentenced to serve three years and six months to five years and three months in prison. Greer’s current sentence also includes charges of habitual felon, felony breaking and entering, assault on an officer or state employee, assault and affray on emergency medical responder and assault inflicting physical injury on a law officer or detention employee.
Acree said Greer will likely face additional charges for Friday’s escape.
The Caldwell Corrections Center is located at 480 Pleasant Hill Road in Hudson.
