Wilma Reece Hunt
December 12, 1941 - January 27, 2025
Wilma Reece Hunt, 83, of Greer, SC, passed away in the comfort of her home with her family by her side on Monday, January 27, 2025.
Born in Drexel, NC, on December 12, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Rawleigh Edward Reece and Zada Elizabeth Bennett Reece.
She spent her early days surrounded by family, growing up with siblings and cousins that became her first and forever friends. Though time passed and life moved forward, the connections she shared with them remained. She graduated from Drexel High School and married Peter David Hunt in 1960. They met at the Drexel Community Center where the first sparks of a "hello" would blossom into 65 years of love and partnership. Together they raised five successful children, Eddie, Lori, Tracey, Randy, and Reece. Their life together moved them to many places over the years, though her heart and her thoughts never ventured far from her home in Drexel. The family moved to Baltimore, MD, in 1973, then to Minneapolis, MN, and Selma, AL, prior to settling in Greer, SC. With each move, she made their house a home while finding new places for the family to explore.
Wilma enjoyed taking her children to the library and among the many stories they brought home, the Heidi books held a special place. She made life more colorful. She had many creative talents she expressed through ceramics, creating crafts and florals, sewing, and crocheting many beautiful afghans. She had a natural green thumb and could revive and sustain any plant she touched, winning 'yard of the month' several times. She also showed her love through the food she prepared, treating family to wonderful home-cooked meals and special desserts. Many in the family had a special dish or dessert that only Wilma could make.
Wilma was fiercely devoted to and happiest around her family. Her love was strong. It was the kind of love that held firm in life's storms, was there when others needed help, and never backed down when it came to protecting those she held dear. She was a beloved grandmother to Hallee, Madi, Sydney, Lila, Hunter, Mackenzie, Drake, Megan, Catherine, and Rawleigh. Once grandchildren arrived, she delighted in gathering all together for long nights of bingo and fun prizes at Thanksgiving. Wilma, "Granny," "Nana", was the heart of our home and family. She has touched many lives with her nurturing spirit, unwavering commitment to family, strength, generosity, and love. She will live in us always and be dearly missed.
Wilma is survived by her husband of 65 years, Peter David Hunt; daughters, Lori (Dr. Eric) Nicely of Knoxville, TN, Tracey (Jeff) Cook of Greer, SC, and Reece Hunt of Brooklyn, NY; son, Dr. William (Dr. Laura) Hunt of Atlanta, GA; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Joyce (Ken) Black; and brother, Dean (Joyce) Reece.
In addition to her parents, Wilma was preceded in death by a daughter, Nena Renae Hunt; son, Dr. David Edward Hunt; and brothers, Ray, Jimmy, Wayne, Jerry, and Joe Billy Reece.
Services were held Friday, January 31, 2025, at Sossoman Funeral Home and burial followed at Burke Memorial Park.
