A 21-year old woman was killed in a house fire late Wednesday morning. Burke County officials released her identity on Thursday.
Firefighters saw heavy smoke when they were responding to the fire at 2389 Peeler St., Morganton, just after 11:05 a.m. on Wednesday, according to a release from the Burke County Fire Marshal鈥檚 Office.
Firefighters began working to stop the fire and searching for a person who was reportedly still inside the home.
During the search, firefighters found 21-year-old Rebekah Woody dead in a bedroom of the home, the fire marshal鈥檚 office said.
Two other people also were injured at the scene, but their injuries were not fire related, the fire marshal鈥檚 office said. No firefighter injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal鈥檚 office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Woody鈥檚 cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
