UNC Health Blue Ridge in Â鶹´«Ã½ is restricting visitors under the age of 18.
Children under 18 cannot visit hospital patients effective Jan. 7, the hospital said in a news release Monday.
The hospital is seeing an increase in patients with respiratory viruses such as COVID-19, influenza and RSV, and stomach viruses like norovirus.
“While some cases of these viruses may be mild, they can be far more severe for individuals with underlying health conditions, children, and the elderly, potentially leading to life-threatening complications,†Gary Paxson, president and CEO of UNC Health Blue Ridge, said in the release. “In light of these concerns, we are implementing additional precautionary measures to protect the health and well-being of all our patients, staff, and visitors.â€
The visitor restriction reduces the risk of transmission to vulnerable individuals within the hospital, the release said.

UNC Health Blue Ridge said visitors with any symptoms of illness, such as cough, fever or gastrointestinal issues, should not visit until the symptoms are gone.
“This is vital in minimizing the risk of spreading viruses to those who are already at greater risk,†the release said.
All visitors are encouraged to clean their hands frequently and wear masks in patient areas, the hospital said.
“We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and understanding as we work together to protect our patients and each other,†Paxson said. “Your efforts in following these guidelines will help ensure everyone remains as safe as possible during this challenging time.â€
